GLENS ISSUE LEAGUE GOAL

Committee have SPFL Rutherglen vision

- MARK PIRIE

Glencairn hope the junior football revamp can bring senior Scottish football back to Rutherglen.

There has been no senior side in the town since Clyde left Shawfield over three decades ago, however a change in the structure of Scottish football could open a door for The Glens.

Committee member Peter Ferguson joined The Lanarkshire Football Show to talk about the plans for a West of Scotland League below the Lowland League.

The club have already expressed an interest in ‘tier six’ of the the pyramid and Ferguson hopes it can provide a pathway for the side.

He told the podcast: “That’s the reality of what going into the pyramid does; right through to winning the Champions League - as ridiculous as it sounds.

“For a young boy from Rutherglen who is in one of our youth teams he will see there is a pathway if he is a good player.

“He can get a bit of Glencairn and move up. There is a pathway for players and clubs to the senior leagues. When you get to the top of the juniors now where do you go from there?

“I think it will make the clubs more marketable as well; to be able to say we are in tier six or tier seven of the Scottish football league. A lot of people in Scotland don’t know what the juniors are; they think it’s kids football.

“Being part of the pyramid also opens up doors to the club licence which is certainly something Glencairn are looking at and starting to cost up our stadium.

“I believe it is 75 per cent there already but it’s certainly something that we are looking at. With that comes access to playing in the senior Scottish Cup.

“It’s an exciting time for the juniors. If the SJFA haven’t been able to make this happen then the clubs have to take it into their own hands.”

In a statement, the Lowland League confirmed they had enjoyed a brilliant response to the West of Scotland League proposal following the deadline to register a note of interest.

It read: “Following the passing of the date for clubs to note an interest in the proposed WoSFL.

“We can confirm that a total of 48 clubs from all grades have submitted emails thus far, asking to be kept informed of further developments.

“Clubs who have not noted their interest yet are still welcome to contact George Fraser to do so.

“This also does not preclude clubs from applying once more information is released.”
