The Mazda2 supermini is now smarter than ever – not just to admire from the kerbside or while inside the cabin but under the bonnet, too.

The Japanese marque has simplified the range so that there’s just a fivemodel line-up – all using Mazda’s tried and tested 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine.

This unit is offered in two power outputs – 75 and 90PS – and it is matched to the brand’s M Hybrid mild-hybrid technology as standard with the six-speed manual gearbox.

As a result, manual versions of the Mazda2 have emissions from as low as 94-95g/km and an average fuel economy of 53.3mpg.

There’s also the option of a six-speed automatic transmissi­on.

Exterior design changes include a new grille with a mesh pattern like that seen on the Mazda3 family hatchback.

A wider signature wing and revised headlights heighten the Mazda2’s sporty appearance and a redesigned back bumper gives the impression of a lower stance on the road.

The supermini already had a quality interior but materials and the cabin design have been enhanced, most noticeably with the dashboard trims, air vent louvres, door inserts and instrument hood.

New front seats are also designed to make journeys more comfortabl­e, with a structure that better cossets the driver and passenger. Mazda’s cars are renowned for their driver focus and engaging and dynamic characteri­stics – and the latest 2 is no exception.

Tweaks to the suspension and torque vectoring system improve the handling and make its road manners even more impressive.
