Stonelaw High finisherd in fifth place in round four of the 2020 SPL Energy Networks Warriors Championship.

All five competing schools at Scotstoun last Wednesday produced some brilliant running rugby, taking full advantage of benign weather conditions at the home of the Glasgow Warriors.

Eastwood High progressed through to the semi-finals, edging past impressive debutants Lockerbie Academy.

Stonelaw won two, lost nine and drew one of their 12 matches, scoring 32 tries in total.

Round four brought together Stonelaw, Eastwood High, Lockerbie Academy, Jordanhill School and North West Community Campus, as 225 players competed across 30 matches.

Each school had S1 and S2 boys’ steams and an under-15 girls’ team competing, with a total of 227 tries scored during the day’s action.

Stonelaw High pupil Thomas Greig said: “I started up rugby a year ago. All my friends were playing, so I decided to play as well and really enjoyed it.

“I have also made new friends through the sport, having joined a rugby club.

“I like the team aspect of rugby and would love to play for Glasgow Warriors when I’m older.”

This is the third year that Glasgow Warriors’ official community partner, SP Energy Networks, have supported the Championship.

It aims to raise awareness and improve access to grassroots level rugby – whilst also promoting active and healthy lifestyles to young people.

The Championship, and the important community engagement it generates, also seeks to recognise sport as a valuable life tool in teaching children about team working, leadership and communication skills.

A total of 1215 boys and girls from 27 schools across west, central and southern Scotland are battling it out to be crowned 2020 champions.

A record number of 405 girls are taking part in the 2020 SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship.

Supporting women and girls on the pitch is mirrored in SP Energy Networks’ support of women in the workplace, through activities like apprenticeships, women returners’ programmes and their #NotJustForBoys campaign, in partnership with the Scotland Women Rugby team.

Matches between the remaining schools will take place on Wednesdays, March 11 and 18, with the semi-finals taking place on April 22.

The final is on Friday, May 15.
