FEARS FOR A CLUB IN CRISIS

Secretary exits amid ‘strained’ relationship

- MARK PIRIE

Cambuslang Rangers legend Alan Wardlaw fears the club could close its doors as it plunged into another crisis.

Secretary David Ashcroft resigned from his position at the weekend, citing a “strained” working relationship, and claiming, “I’m not losing a friend over football.”

He became the second committee member to leave the club in as many months, following former vice-chairman Jim Logan’s exit.

With Lang mired in an onfield relegation battle after the draw with Craigmark and facing an ongoing £26,000 cash dispute with former treasurer Nikki Niven, former goalkeeper and gaffer Wardlaw admits he is worried about the long term future of the club.

He urged more people to back the Somervell Park side after a string of fundraising events were axed and with committee numbers dwindling.

“The club just don’t seem to be getting the support they need,” he told the Reformer.

“There were race nights and a Hall of Fame dinner planned; but they were both cancelled.

“They are going through a really tough time and it’s a shame to see.

“Even when they are trying things, members just aren’t interested. When they held an EGM the turnout was in single figures.

“In my opinion there is a very real danger the club could go out of business if they don’t get the support.

“With Billy, Paul and David Kerr, it won’t be for the want of trying that something like that happens. They don’t get the support just now.

“They just seem like they are in a really precarious position.”

He continued: “It’s sad to see board members walking away. They will have their own reasons but you would hope they would have been with the club in its time of need.

“It’s not a criticism, because I’m sure it can be hard going.

“It won’t be through lack of effort from the people behind the scenes if they do have to take serious steps in the future.”

Following Saturday’s home draw with Craigmark, Wardlaw backed management duo Billy Campbell and Paul McColl to keep the club in the division.

“Billy and Paul have had a wee bit of a rough deal,” he added.

“It’s a difficult situation. The background has to settle and the the football will take care of itself.

“Something needs to be done to steady the ship.”
