Foodbank has a Plan B and will continue to help those in need
Workers at Rutherglen’s foodbank are preparing contingency plans in case they are struck by the coronavirus.
However, they say the facility has not yet been affected by a shortage of supplies.
Foodbank committee member Ian Robertson told the Reformer that although panic buying in supermarkets across the region has led to fears that the most vulnerable could be affected, there has not yet been a noticeable effect on the foodbank.
He said:“We are starting to produce a contingency plan for what could affect us.
“These are just in the case of emergencies but we are wanting to be prepared for things escalating.
“We are OK at the moment with food and there is still enough just now. If there is an increase in the food shortages in the shops then that is something we could have problems with eventually, but not at the moment.
“The biggest worry would be if a lot of volunteers became sick at the same time, and obviously people coming together at the foodbank is a problem.”
The foodbank are already taking steps to cut down on hand interaction, including not providing biscuits and tea. They will be holding a food drive in Morrisons on March 26 and 27, and are hoping to encourage people along to support them.
Ian added:“We’ll do everything we can to keep running and we have plans in place to offer a reduced service if need be.
“Vulnerable people in the area are likely to be affected by this, so we will do whatever we can to help.”
