Hamilton and District Athletics Club took bronze medals from the Scottish National Under-12 Indoor Superteams event at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena last month.

Their girls’ ‘A’ team of Abbie Dick, Eva Gray, Rose Scott and Layla Reddiex won bronze after completing a 60m, long jump, shot put and 4x200m relay.

Hamilton’s girls’ ‘B’ team of Skye Davidson, Sophie Shearer, Alix Burns and Olivia Davidson finished 19th overall, and were the highest-placed ‘B’ team, beating eight ‘A’ teams on the day.

Earlier in the month, the club attended the Scottish National Indoor 4x200m Relays where they had four girls’ teams compete.

Their under-13 girls’ teams both narrowly missed the semi-finals.

Hamilton’s girls’ ‘A’ team of club captain Eva Burns, Orla Brown, Hannah Kulke and Tiana Greenshields scored their club record for U15 relay and the quickest girls’ time, they progressed to the semis, where they narrowly missed out on a place in the final, finishing eighth in Scotland.

Their girls’ ‘B’ team of Neve Elliott, Lauren Kane, Molly O’Donnell and Melissa Govan ran well and surpassed themselves, showing grit and determination to finish 17th overall in Scotland.

The indoor season has also gone well for the club, with more than 70 personal bests gained by their athletes.

Head coach Gregg Dick said: “We are a small club of 60 members, with probably around 30 actively competing, and with how new a club we are, it shows the grassroots athletics we offer is working.

“We are progressing in the right way and hope for more success in the coming year.”

This year’s Davie Cooper Soccer Sevens has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The event had been due to take place at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds on Sunday, May 18.

A spokesperson for Hamilton Sports Council said: “The decision has unfortunately been made to cancel the Davie Cooper Soccer Sevens.

“Amateur football at all levels has been suspended, SFA referees are not allowed to referee games at any level, and most leisure places can’t take bookings.”

Two members of Lesmahagow’s Lunar Gymnastics Club have earned the chance to qualify for the Regional Team Final in Birmingham later this year.

Lanark duo Lara Gourlay and Eve Hamilton won silver medals at the Regional Team Qualifiers and Club League One for Tumbling at the Peak, Stirling on February 29 and March 1.

Lara took second place in NDP1 11-12 years and Eve in NDP2 11-12 years.

Both were due to attend the competition at Birmingham in June, but Scottish Gymnastics have cancelled all events until the end of that month.

Should the event be rearranged, and they make the top eight, the girls would qualify for the British Championship

Medal winners finals, which are due to take place in July.

A Lunar Gymnastics Club spokesperson said: “We hope the girls will get their chance to compete at some point, however, safety is a priority.”

In total, the club brought 13 medals back to Lesmahagow from Stirling, with Keira Smillie from Carluke and Freya Trevena from Braidwood earning bronze medals in their categories.

On Saturday, February 29 the club took six gold, two silver and a bronze from the Tumblers event.

Gold went to Edie Knox (7) from Carnwath, Eowyn Inch (9) from Blackwood, Charlotte Christie (9) of Pettinain, Taylor Weir (11) and Scott Smith, both from Lesmahagow, and Abbi Gilmour (12) from Larkhall.

Silver was won by Charlotte Harding (9) from Lanark and Rebecca Bell (8) from Stonehouse, while bronze went to Lily Chalmers (8).

Hamilton’s Michael Troy finished second in the Aberdeen Standard Investments Boat Race earlier this month, despite being part of a “strong” Robert Gordon University crew.

University of Aberdeen defeated their historic rivals by a length on the Granite City’s River Dee as they sped over the line in an impressive eight minutes and 3.0 seconds, to lift the silverware at the landmark 25th outing of the event.

Michael, 19, and his Robert Gordon University crew completed the 3.5km course in a time of eight minutes and 6.0 seconds.

Katie Sugden, president of Aberdeen University Boat Club said: “The result was absolutely incredible – I’m thrilled that we retained the title in such an important year for the boat race. The crew has been training so hard for the last few months, and Robert

Gordon University had a strong crew, so it was a well-deserved victory and I’m really proud of everything they’ve achieved.”

Lizzie Buchan, president of Robert Gordon University Boat Club, commented: “Congratulations to the crew from the University of Aberdeen – they put on an impressive performance.

“It’s always disappointing not to win, but I’m proud of the way the crew rowed. Although we didn’t cross the finish line first, we put up a really good fight.”

Earlier in the day, the alumni boat race was won by Robert Gordon University by a canvas in a time of eight minutes and 42.8 seconds.

The universities’ second crew race was also won by Robert Gordon University by one foot in two minutes and 23.9 seconds.”

Hamilton and District’s Abbie Dick, Eva Gray, Rose Scott and Layla Reddiex with their prizes have confirmed that this year’s Tom Scott Memorial Road Race has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The 10-mile and 6k ‘Round the Loch’ races were scheduled to take place at Strathclyde Park on Sunday, April 5.

Organisers hope they will be able to stage the 58th edition of the hugely popular event in the second half of this year.

All existing entries will be valid for the rescheduled date and if those with an entry are unable to attend, they will be given the option of a refund or entry for the 2021 event.

Bobby Hill from organisers Law and District AAC said: “We would like to issue our sincere apologies, we are extremely disappointed, but feel this is the responsible decision to make, given the severity of the current situation.

“It’s a blow, as many plans were in place and we had already committed to some financial outlays which we are obligated

Axed The Tom Scott Memoiral Road Race will not take place this year to fulfil.

“Despite this, it is heartening that we have had total and absolute support from our entrants since the decision was announced, with a great many resolving to return on the rearranged date.

“The athletics community in Scotland has been extremely loyal to our event over the years, and we are especially grateful for that during the current uncertainty.

“Our suppliers have been accommodating and our main sponsor, Hydracrat, has been very supportive of our decision too.

“For a club-run event like ours, these are two extremely significant factors.

“We are now assessing the calendar for a suitable date to rearrange, and early indications suggest August or September, should it be safe to conduct the race at that point.

“We are extremely optimistic that when the day does come, the 58th Tom Scott Road Race will be a cracker.”

Some games have still to be played. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus all games are cancelled from now until further notice.

The over 70s have to self- isolate and also the advice is to take no chances, so it may be some time before the remainder of the season is played out, if at all.
