Lynne rolls with the crisis

Snack van has dished out 700 hot rolls to vital staff

A kind-hearted snack van owner is buttering up vital frontline staff who are working through the lockdown by giving away no fewer then 700 hot breakfast rolls.

In just over one week, Lynne Duffin has cooked and dispatched 700 of the hearty morning staples to hospital workers, carers, fire fighters and police officers in appreciation of their dedication during the current crisis.

Roll up, roll up... The owner of a Cambuslang snack van is proving that the best way to thank kind- hearted frontline staff in times of crisis is through the stomach.

Lynne Duffin, who runs The Food Stop in Cambuslang Investment Park, has donated more than 700 hot breakfast rolls to carers, hospital workers and emergency services staff – and expects to hit the 1000 mark by Friday.

Because Lynne’s snack van is one of the few hot food outlets in the area with permission to trade during the lockdown, The Food Stop has been a godsend to essential workers.

“I started getting all these carers who work for a private company called Keane coming. I’d never seen them before – and they kept coming,” explained Lynne, who has operated the snack van for 10 years.

“We decided on Easter Monday to give them all a roll for free as a way of giving something back to carers who worked through Easter and at weekends, doing a great job.

“At the beginning, the focus was all on NHS nurses, and I really felt for the carers. We put a post on Facebook, and it just snowballed from there.”

A big-hearted friend donated £250 to help Lynne feed carers in the community during the coronavirus lockdown.

Since then, regulars who turn to The Food Stop on Clydesmill Road every day for their morning staple began to dig deep when they learned of Lynne’s generous gesture, raising an amazing £1100.

Up to 80 rolls a day, whose fillings range from link and square sausage, to omelette, bacon, tattie scone and black pudding, are served up for key workers Monday to Friday from Lynne’s busy van.

They are then dispatched with the help of her daughter, Carly, husband Brian and a few volunteers, to care homes, hospitals and fire stations.

And there are still plenty of free rolls to go round for police officers on motorcycles who occasionally drop by for a snack.

“We just wanted to give everybody who is on the front line a wee bit of recognition,” explained Lynne, who says that as well as cash, well-wishers have donated cases of juice to wash down her rolls.

“With the money that’s been donated, and me subsidising the normal £1.50 cost of a roll and sausage, I reckon we can keep this going for another couple of weeks.”
