Gee quiz! Kids answer call to test knowledge

A group of schools from throughout South Lanarkshire were able to get quizzical just before the coronavirus lockdown.
Newton Farm Primary in Cambuslang hosted the heats for the Euroquiz, a schools contest that promotes learning while teaching pupils to work together in teams.
The quiz saw 15 schools taking part, in teams of four.
To prepare for the event, pupils used resources to learn about a range of topics including citizenship, modern languages, geography, world history and culture, all with a focus on Europe.
The eventual winners were the Our Lady of Lourdes team from East Kilbride, with another East Kilbride school, Auldhouse Primary , taking second place.
In third was Newton Farm and Blacklaw Primary.
Newton Farm’s principal teacher Louise Robinson helped to organise the event.
She said: “All the teams were really engaged and I think having it in the form of a quiz really helps with that. It gets the competitive side and some good old fashioned competition taking place.
“A lot of work went in from all the schools and it was great to see everyone getting involved.
“There is such a variety of subjects too, so some schools did better in say, language than history, and some did well in geography but less so with general knowledge. It benefits their learning a lot.”
Since its inception in 1993, Euroquiz has proven to be a valuable educational resource for Scottish P6 pupils by fostering an enthusiasm for learning, while simultaneously developing their ability to work in teams and communicate effectively, ultimately increasing their confidence and other core skills.
The winners will now take part in a national final later this year, depending on the coronavirus situation.
