Young linked to Saints job

Darren admits he’d love a return to full-time football

Cambuslang’s Darren Young admits he has ambitions of a switch to full-time football amid links with a move to St Johnstone.

The East Fife boss has been touted as a dark horse to replace Tommy Wright at McDiarmid Park after a successful spell in the dugout at the part-time level.

The former Dunfermline and Aberdeen player admits he hopes to make the return to full-time football in the future but is yet to apply for the Perth role.

Young told the Reformer:

“Full-time football is 100 per cent where I want to be in the long-run.

“I have confidence in my own ability that I would be able to manage at a full-time club.

“I’m flattered that my name has been talked about for the St Johnstone job but I’m just looking to East Fife just now.

“I just want to concentrate on building the team here for next season when we get to start again and try to make the playoff places.

“If anything comes up at fulltime, I can’t plan for that, it is what it is.”

Young had led The Fifers to the verge of the League One play-off places before the remainder of the season was axed.

He admits he is disappointed to not get to play out the remainder of the season but can understand the decision.

The gaffer continued: “First and foremost we have to think of the health of people.

“That comes before football. We are obviously disappointed we didn’t get to play out the full season but it’s out if our control.

“We had been in the top four of the division for the entire season, up until three or four days before the season was called off.

“We had eight games left and we were confident that we could go on and challenge for the top four, but it is what it is.

“At the start I did think they called the season in our league a bit quick but we can’t do anything about that now.

“We have 14 boys signed up for next season so the majority of our squad will be kept on, so contracts aren’t really something that concerns us right now.

“Everyone wants football to be back as soon as possible, but we need to make sure it’s in a safe way.

“When we are back we will be looking to progress again and make it into the top four.”
