Coach thanks public

Boxing trainer grateful for help during shutdown

-

Cambuslang boxing coach Archie Durie has praised people in his local area and wider boxing community for coming to his aid during the Covid-19 shutdown.

Archie, who runs Durie’s Boxing Gym, told a friend that he was struggling to keep afloat with no income during lockdown, and within weeks £700 had been raised.

Durie also said people simply helping out at the gym has made a big difference,

He said:“We’ve been in lockdown for three months and my own mental health has been up and down a wee bit, but I’ve got focus, because I’m trying to get the gym open again, but financially and mentally it has been hard.

“I’ve never asked, but a guy at another gym in Falkirk saw I was struggling a wee bit to keep the club going, so he put a thing on Facebook and asked all the boxing families for help.

“People started donating money, and I got about £700 in less than two weeks.

“I’m too proud to ask, I’d never have done that, but it really helped . The response has been amazing.

“A lot of money has been from my own people, folk in Rutherglen, Cambuslang and Toryglen, and places like that, so that feels good.”

Durie has been helped by people, including Ryan Turner (on the right of the pic, who has painted the gym for free.

“It brings community spirit together,” he said.“I’ve had boxers, parents, staff, everybody down tidying and painting.

“We’ve had our own people in, it has been a community project, but we’re not finished.

“There will be a lot of expense on actually opening up.”
