Ethan saddles up for bike trip to the capital

Teen uses pedal power to raise cash

A Cambuslang teenager proved his pedal power by cycling 96 miles to Edinburgh Castle and back – in the same day.

Fitness fan Ethan Drewett wanted to remain healthy during lockdown, so he turned to his bike when the gyms were all closed down.

Fancying a challenge, Ethan, who works as an assistant design engineer for a telecoms company, hit upon the idea of cycling to Edinburgh and back.

And the kind-hearted 19-year-old decided to help some charities along the way, raising £415 for Show Racism The Red Card and UNICEF.

Former Stonelaw High pupil Ethan explained: “I picked them because they are both pretty close to me. I have got lots of friends who have different ethnicities and I know that they have had to face racism at times.

“And with UNICEF, I know people are not having the basic requirements in life and that’s horrible, so I wanted to help that.”

And while he expected to encounter a few bumps on the road along the way, his 96-mile cycle went more smoothly than Ethan had anticipated.

He explained: “I was pleasantly surprised because the route was flatter than I’d realised.

“It was plain sailing and a straightforward cycle, and the weather was really nice too, so I was really lucky there.

“I did groan a bit in Edinburgh having my lunch – when I realised that I was going to have to do it all over again going back!

“The hardest part was the last bit, because my phone’s battery went. So for the last 10 miles I was having to make sure that I didn’t get lost or take a wrong turn.”

Ethan was also delighted and touched to get so much the support from his family and friends.

He added: “The amount I raised was much more than I had expected. I had targeted £150 and blew that out the water.

“My family were great, they and my brother’s girlfriend all really chipped in to help.”
