BLOOD ONTHE STREET

Horror attack outside busy shop

- EMYLIE HOWIE

A man sustained serious leg and hand injuries during a vicious attack with a hatchet on Monday morning.

The horrifying incident took place on Greenhill Road just before 7am.

More than a dozen police vehicles rushed to the scene outside the Ruglen Rolls corner shop, which one shocked onlooker described as “carnage”.

The surrounding area was immediately cordoned off while officers launched an investigation.

The victim – a 45-year-old man – was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

An eye witness told the Reformer: “There was blood everywhere. The street was covered in it. It was carnage.

“The victim crawled into the rolls shop for help. It was awful.”

In the aftermath of the incident, Ruglen Rolls informed customers on social media that the shop was temporarily closed while police continued their enquiries.

The business reopened yesterday and confirmed that no staff members were involved

or injured in the incident.

Inspector Stephen McManus took steps to reassure locals and confirmed that enquiries into the horror attack – understood to be carried out by one person – were ongoing.

He said: “I would like to reassure people that this attack, although particularly violent, was a targeted and isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the public.

“I appreciate it can be concerning to see such a large police presence in our local streets.

“However, the safety of the public and of our officers is a fundamental priority and this co-ordinated response ensured that the incident was contained with no further escalation.

“There will be additional high visibility patrols in and around the area and I would encourage any members of the community who have concerns to engage with the officers, or if preferable to contact local community officers directly at Rutherglen police office.”

Urging members of the public with information of the incident to come forward, Inspector McManus added: “If anyone has information, please contact us on 101, quoting incident number PS-20200803-0538.”

Margaret Ferrier MP added: “I am grateful to officers for their swift response in dealing with the serious incident in Greenhill Road.

“I would encourage anyone who has information to contact police.”
