DUNCAN’S GOT A HOLE NEW GAME

Golfer aims to reach 1000 for cancer charity

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

A popular Cambuslang golf professional is hoping to ace a special challenge for charity – with a little help from Reformer readers.

Duncan Williamson is taking on a 1000-ball hole in one quest at Kirkhill golf club.

Playing the old 150-yard par three fifth hole that is not currently in use, Duncan will spend Sunday, September 6 hitting balls in the hope of achieving golf ’s holy grail.

He is hoping to raise money for the Beatson cancer charity and is calling on Reformer readers to back his challenge.

Duncan explained: “Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, charities like the Beatson have not been able to do the kind of fundraising they normally would, so this will hopefully give them a boost. It is a fantastic charity which is very close to my heart.

“There will be a barbecue and it would be great to see as many members as possible support me.”

Duncan is no stranger to charity golfing challenges, having previously played eight, nine and 10 rounds in one day.

This one will be both a mental and physical challenge, and Duncan has vowed to keep going even if he aces the hole. He said: “I’ll be starting at 10am and it will probably take about 10 hours – I’ll be shattered.

“If you think about hitting 100 balls on the range and multiply that by 10, it’s tough going.

“Even if I get a hole in one, I’m going to keep going. If I do get one, I’ll make the ball into a little trophy and auction it off. I’ll also be giving a flag from the Masters to the Beatson to auction off.”

Holes in one do not come easily in golf – in a single shot, the odds of a tour pro having a hole in one is 2500-1.

Previous challenges with 50 balls have seen European Tour professionals fail to bag one, although former Ryder Cup star Andy Sullivan did manage it on a 500-ball challenge.

But the main target will be raising as much money as possible for a worthy cause and with over £600 already raised, Duncan is hoping to see that number rise.
