CamGlen go radio ga ga over Holyrood praise

- NIKI TENNANT

Politicians have tipped their hats to staff and volunteers at Cambuslang and Rutherglen’s very own radio station in recognition of their efforts to tackle feelings of isolation during lockdown.

Staff and volunteers at CamGlen Radio have gone the extra mile by broadcasting from home in a bid to continue to bring updates, announcements, news and entertainment to the local community.

Now, James Kelly MSP has tabled a motion at the Scottish Parliament in appreciation of the station’s work.

The motion reads: “That the Parliament recognises the work of CamGlen Radio in continuing to broadcast to its local community during lockdown; acknowledges the efforts of the presenters in continuing to go on air from their own homes; notes the important service that the radio station provides in keeping people upto-date and involved with local announcements; recognises the work of CamGlen staff in continuing to provide this service for older people in particular throughout lockdown by way of its ‘Golden Age Hour,’ and thanks the radio station for its excellent work in promoting social inclusion during a lockdown period when many were in isolation.”

CamGlen Radio, which has been serving Cambuslang and Rutherglen as a full- time community radio station since March 2015, was recently awarded another five- year licence by broadcast regulator, Ofcom.

Since inception, its programming has developed significantly from a daytime output which provides free advertising for local community groups and charitable organisations, promoting the best in local unsigned music and providing up to date local news and information.

The station recently reintroduced its regular schools programming, produced and presented by local school pupils.

CamGlen listeners can also enjoy shows specialising in local history, community matters and even photography.

New and emerging artists and bands can visit its studios within No 18 venue in Rutherglen to perform live on air.

It has more than 100 volunteers, one in four of whom has a support need, and CamGlen prides itself on being an inclusive radio station for all, on air and behind the scenes.

The acknowledgement at Holyrood was warmly welcomed by CamGlen senior team leader and presenter, Tam Curry.

He said: “We were delighted to learn CamGlen Radio was recognised in Scottish Parliament and we’d like to extend our thanks to James Kelly MSP for his support.

“It has indeed been a challenging time for us to maintain our radio service, but thanks to our amazing team of staff and volunteers producing and recording radio programmes from home, we have kept listeners engaged, entertained and up to date with local information.

“This was of particular importance at the height of the lockdown, when residents of Cambuslang and Rutherglen were most isolated, and we’ll continue to operate as close to normal as restrictions continue, so listeners can still hear their favourite programmes as well as some fantastic new ones.”
