The sound of music in local care home

- JONATHAN GEDDES

Residents at a Rutherglen care home were treated to a trip down memory lane earlier this month.

The David Wa l k e r Gardens was visited by the Not Forgotten charity, who performed a special outdoor concert for residents.

That meant locals at the care home were able to stay indoors and follow social distancing guidelines while enjoying both the music and a tea that had been arranged.

Residents sang along, tapped their feet and waved flags as The Not Forgotten professional entertainment team of singers and musicians performed a set of popular classics and rousing favourites, including a poignant special tribute to the late Dame Vera Lynn.

Debra Allison of David Walker Gardens was delighted at the visit.

She said: “Despite the ongoing challenges Covid-19 presents, hope and community-spirit prevails in David Walker Gardens.

“The appearance of The Not Forgotten professional entertainment team – observing all appropriate guidance and safety procedures – was very much welcomed and enjoyed.

“Despite the heavy rain showers, service users and staff enjoyed singing and dancing along to some old classics.

“The atmosphere they created typified the good cheer and humour our residents and staff have shown – and continue to show – throughout this crisis.

“Occasions like this give everyone a chance to reflect on their incredible resilience – and the importance of togetherness in challenging times.”

Brigadier James Stopford, CBE, CEO of The Not Forgotten said: “Sadly, events to commemorate VE Day, VJ Day and D Day could not take place properly this year, so we were determined to help WW2 veterans and those who have served their country mark these important days by bringing the celebrations to them.”

The Not Forgotten charity combats isolation and loneliness amongst the Armed Forces community through social activities and challenge holidays.
