Ringing in the changes at Durie’s Boxing Club

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Duries Boxing Club might have opened up its doors after six months of lockdown, but coach Archie Durie says it’s a very different landscape to before.

The Rutherglen coach says it has been strange getting back into the swing of things, with guidelines and rules to adhere to.

He said:“My kids’classes and my actual boxers’classes have filled up to capacity again very quickly, where the classes have been reduced to a maximum of 20 people.

“Keeping to the government two-metre social distancing rules makes the classes smaller and we have reduced the times of the classes, to allow time for cleaning and sterilising all of the surfaces.

“That reduces class times from two hours down to an hour and a half.

“But all in the club are buzzing again and everybody is delighted to be back.”

Durie says he’s now just waiting on the green light for his fighters to get back to organised competition, but they will be ready.

He said:“That’s us affiliated with Boxing Scotland, the boxers have all got their books and everything, but until actual competition gets cleared and passed, we’re waiting on that.

“The amateurs are supposed to be starting their European Championships and the youths are starting to get back as well, so it’s just a matter of time, waiting for the wee break-through and to find out when it’s going to go ahead.

“I’m keeping them training away, they’ve been training through lockdown and I’ve got them working away still.

“My boys and girls will be ready to fight when they get the go-ahead to get back, definitely.

“We were supposed to have a show at the King’s Park Hotel on May 22 and it all fell through due to Covid, but we’ve been told we’re top of the list for a show.”
