Durie: Boxing is crucial for mental health

Two sets of clues – but the answers are the same.

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says starting the sport back up, and opening gyms, is crucial to people’s mental health.

Durie reckons there will be a major influx in people looking to take up gym memberships once we’re out of lockdown, and reckons professional boxing could start back up in May.

To that end, he has fighter Abie

Tweedlie lined up for a fight, as soon as they’re given the green light.

On boxing in general, Durie’s Amateur Boxing Club owner Archie said:“I can’t stress how important I think it is for the mental and physical side of it that boxing gets back up and running.

“Forget pubs and clubs, the gyms opening back up going to be massive, and I’m surprised it has taken the government this long to prioritise and putting gyms first again.

“As everybody knows, people were into gyms and fitness and things like that before lockdowns, but I think one lockdown is lifted again the people wanting to go to gyms again will be ten-fold.

“For the mental health side of things, a lot of people are stuck in by themselves with nobody to talk to, and this gets them back out there and amongst people.

“For the professional boxing side of things, I’ve been speaking to people and they’re talking about getting shows back up and running in May, and it might be with them doing a show a week.”
