Plea to help save Lucky

£5000 needed for pup to receive life-saving operation

- EMYLIE HOWIE

A Cambuslang woman is appealing for help in raising funds for an operation that will save her beloved pet dog’s life.

When Nicola Ducie took ninemonth-old Lucky for a routine vet appointment, it was discovered that the Cocker Spaniel has a serious heart condition.

Lucky was at the vet’s to receive her second set of jags when Nicola, 29, was given the devastating news that her pup will require the life-saving surgery as soon as possible if she is to survive.

Nicola told the Reformer: “It was the worst possible news to be given.

“The operation costs between £5000 and £5500.

“Lucky had no symptoms and is still very active, but if she doesn’t get the operation as soon as possible, she will not live long.”

Nicola has been left to raise the funds by herself, because unfortunately her pet insurance policy doesn’t cover the cost of the procedure.

So far, she has paid more than £1000 for scans and after the operation is carried out, Lucky will need to remain on tablet medication.

“I took out insurance for Lucky so that I’d have peace of mind that everything would be covered,” Nicola added.

“But as her heart problem was discovered within the 14 day ‘cooling off ’ period, the insurers won’t pay for it.

“So I have to try and raise the money myself.

“Ideally, Lucky should have had the operation before Christmas but I couldn’t afford it.

“The vet hasn’t given me a definite timeframe, but has said she really needs the operation as soon as possible. “I don’t want to run out of time. “But if she dies before the operation, I’ll give people who have donated their money back. It’s not money for me, it’s to help Lucky.

“It is the most awful thing that could happen to such a beautiful puppy. Lucky is family now and I won’t give up on her.

“So if anyone is able to donate anything at all, they will be helping a much-loved puppy and we will all be eternally grateful.”
