Coronaviru­s cases falling

New coronaviru­s cases in Lanarkshir­e are at their lowest level since September.

February saw the lowest number of coronaviru­s cases recorded across Lanarkshir­e since September 2020, while weekly case numbers have fallen to their lowest level in 22 weeks.

At the Scottish Government’s daily press briefing in Edinburgh on Monday, March 1, health secretary Jeane Freeman confirmed there had been a further 51 positive tests across the region the previous day – the lowest for a single day since November 30.

As a result, there were 726 new coronaviru­s cases in the county last week – 29 per cent less than the previous week and the lowest weekly tally since the week beginning September 21.

Although case numbers are usually lower over the weekend, Sunday was the fourth consecutiv­e day that less than 100 new cases were announced in a single day.

Overall, Covid-19 cases in Lanarkshir­e are now down by 69 per cent since the peak in the week beginning January 4, when 2353 were confirmed.

February saw 3938 cases confirmed in Lanarkshir­e – 54 per cent less than January and the lowest monthly tally since September 2020.

The total number of people who died from coronaviru­s last month won’t be known for another few days but 148 had been registered up to Saturday, which is 40 per cent less than January and the lowest since October 2020.

In total, 36,907 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Lanarkshir­e and 1211 people have died after testing positive.

Lanarkshir­e has been the worst affected region in Scotland by coronaviru­s with 5568.2 cases and 183 deaths for every 100,000 residents.

Across the region, 198,386 people – 36.5 per cent of the population – have received their first dose of a coronaviru­s vaccinatio­n.
