Bethan nets top award

Netball star named uni’s sportswoman of the year

- EUAN ROBERTSON

Bethan Goodwin says she is honoured to be named University of Strathclyde’s Sportswoman of the year.

The 21 year-old was recognised for her outstanding performances for Strathclyde Sirens this season in the Netball Superleague.

Goodwin, who represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, was elated to receive the award - even if she was disappointed to miss out on the prize ceremony.

“I was truly honoured when I received the email to say that I won the award.” Goodwin said.

“I won best first year a couple of years ago so it’s just amazing to finish my final year at Strathclyde. I’m applying for graduate jobs at the moment so it was straight onto my CV.

“I’m gutted we’re missing out on that but it’s an award amongst the whole university.

“The award will usually be given at the sports ball but unfortunately that won’t happen, because it’s the best night out of the year.”

The Cambuslang star is currently juggling writing her final dissertation at university with playing for Strathclyde Sirens.

Goodwin admits it can be difficult at times but she’s acclimatised to the demands since representing Scotland whilst still at school.

She said: “It has been challenging at times because uni and netball can both get really busy during the season at the same time - that’s when it becomes harder to manage.

“I’ve played with the national team since I was just 15 throughout my higher exams and also throughout uni so I’ve had a lot of practice at it.

“It’s just been about finding the balance between prioritising uni work, prioritising netball and trying to enjoy my rest time too

“I’ve had to be super organised to ensure that I can manage everything but it hasn’t been easy.”

The Sirens were edged out 43-38 in an exhilarating clash with Loughborough Lighting on Saturday.

Despite the defeat, Goodwin was extremely positive about the performance, adding: “Loughborough have been in really good form this season and I think Bath are the only team to have kept them to such a close goal margin.

“I think we kept them to the lowest score as well of the season so it was a really good game from the girls. We’re playing them twice in a row so we just hope that we can get the win and learn from that game.”
