Activities increase as lockdown eases
Non-contact sport for teenagers can resume across Rutherglen and Cambuslang from next week, as gyms and leisure centres across South Lanarkshire prepare to reopen next month.
The fitness industry is due to fully restart on Monday, April 26, when Scotland will move to a modified version of the level three restrictions that were in place before lockdown.
Nicola Sturgeon recently announced a number of lockdown easing measures for April and May, as mainland Scotland moves towards level three of the four-tier system – and from there, it is hoped, into level two.
The First Minister’s announcement stated that people will initially only be able to exercise alone or with others from their household.
Group exercise, such as classes, will return on May 17, along with adult outdoor contact sport.
Gyms are likely to have a maximum capacity and maintain a one-way system, while the wearing of masks will be recommended while walking around the gym floor.
Ruth Davidson of the Scottish Conservatives previously called for gyms to reopen earlier, so that women in particular can “get out of the house and do basic exercise without fear”.
However, the First Minister said the Government must make “careful, cautious, sensible and sometimes unpopular decisions” in order to exit lockdown safely.
