Solitary local road in £10m upgrade
South Lanarkshire Council has unveiled plans to improve roads across the region which will cost more than £10 million – but only one road in Rutherglen and Cambuslang will be upgraded.
The local authority’s plans for the new financial year will see £7.5m spent on resurfacing programmes.
A further £2.6m has been put aside for patching, preventative maintenance, footways, structures, traffic signals, lighting and investment with North Lanarkshire Council at Horsley Brae, near Wishaw.
However just £105,000 of that money will go towards improving roads in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, with Mill Street set to benefit from carriageway resurfacing. It is only the only road in the area listed for work.
The Royal Burgh is categorised with East Kilbride in the council’s listings, with 36 roads in East Kilbride and Strathaven earmarked for work.
Council decisions on where to invest are based on the road’s condition, the number of defects (potholes) reported, the number of third party liability claims received and its maintenance category.
The local authority’s head of roads and transportation services, Gordon Mackay, said: “This is a significant investment in improving roads and roads infrastructure across the area during the next financial year.
“Commuters and other road users alike will benefit from these improvements.
“Our team carry out detailed analysis of the condition of our roads and following this we then prioritise the order in which the work needs done which enables us to come up with our annual programme.
“It is likely that road users will have noticed a change in the condition of some roads as the winter months have not been kind to many surfaces, but we believe this programme will help improve many roads across South Lanarkshire.”
