Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie is offering free classes this month, because he wants to give something back to the community.

Following discussions with his staff, Archie is also refusing to raise his prices due to Covid concerns, and his instead lowering what he asks from his members.

Archie, who runs Durie’s Boxing Gym, said:“I’ve been doing this for the full month of April, in the build-up for when we do open the gym.

“I’m trying to give something back and I’m doing eight free classes per week, outside, for my ladies, kids and my boxers, and the feedback I’m getting off it has been very welcome.

“It has been a buzz, to see everyone from the kids to the adults, to the women, to the professional boxers, to everything – it has lifted everybody’s morale and it’s really good.

“I like to give a bit back, and it’s about helping people’s mental health, because everybody’s going a bit stir-crazy.”

Durie will keep members’prices at £45, it’s now £30 for kids, and is lowering one-off fees by a pound to £5.

He said:“I had a meeting with my staff last weekend in preparation of opening back up on April 26, and everybody else is putting their prices up but I’m going to keep my memberships the same, and lower them for kids.

“I’m keeping my prices lower; everybody’s blaming Covid and putting prices up, so I’m trying to give something back and to encourage people to get involved, for mental health awareness, and a physical boost for starting back.”
