Tennis club serve up a treat for LTA chief visit

- PAUL THOMSON

Rutherglen Tennis Club had a special visit from the president of the sport’s governing body in the UK last week – as they were able to show off plans for their ambitious Project 100.

Lawn Tennis Association chief David Rawlinson dropped by the club’s courts at the weekend, inspecting the current facilities at Viewpark and Burnside.

And Rawlinson was also shown the site of the club’s proposed covered courts just down the road at Overtoun Park.

Project 100 aims to celebrate the club’s centenary in 2022 by opening a new clubhouse at Viewpark and the covered courts at Overtoun Park, with the club embarking on a major fundraising mission to help bring their dreams to fruition.

In July, Rutherglen Tennis Club members completed their ‘Peloton to Wimbledon’ and raised over £20,000 for the proposals and funding for breakfast clubs at Bankhead and St Columbkille’s Primary Schools.

Rawlinson’s visit also coincided with the club hosting the Lanarkshire Open.

He may be more accustomed to trophy presentations at Wimbledon finals, but he was on hand to present the prizes in the final of the nine-years and under competition, where Cameron Rae from Western Tennis and Racquets Club pipped home club players Fraser Whitelock in a closely contested final.

The club posted on their social media pages: “Delighted to welcome LTA President Dave Rawlinson to the club today to watch the Lanarkshire Open, show him around our Viewpark and Burnside facilities and take him to the site of our proposed covered courts in Overtoun Park.

“Hopefully he’ll return to see finished project.

“And what a privilege for Cameron and Fraser to receive their Lanarkshire Open Trophies from him.

“He put all his training and experience in presenting the Wimbledon trophies to very good use.

“What a lovely guy!”

• Meanwhile, the club have also appointed Craig Williams to their coaching team. He will work across their adult, junior and development programmes.
