Covid cases more than double in Rutherglen & Cambuslang

Covid-19 cases more than doubled in Rutherglen and Cambuslang last week as Lanarkshir­e set a new record for weekly case numbers.

Across the county, more than 3000 people tested positive for corornavir­us in the space of a week for the first time – a 95 per cent increase on the previous week.

More than 60,000 coronaviru­s cases have now been recorded in Lanarkshir­e, meaning that approximat­ely one in every 10 people across the county has tested positive for Covid-19.

In Rutherglen and Cambuslang, cases skyrockete­d last week after 299 new positive tests were recorded – a 131 per cent increase on the previous week.

The region had among the highest rates of new cases across Scotland after 4.71 new Covid-19 cases were recorded for every 1000 residents.

Halfway, Hallside and Drumsagard (44) and Shawfield and Clincarthi­ll (34) recorded the most cases in the region while the highest rate of new cases was in Shawfield and Clincarthi­ll (9.71).

Last week was only the second full week after the majority of coronaviru­s restrictio­ns were lifted by the Scottish Government.

In total, 61,971 people have tested positive for coronaviru­s in Lanarkshir­e and 1385 people have died from the virus.

New Covid-19 cases more than doubled in South Lanarkshir­e last week – with Rutherglen and Cambuslang a significan­t part of the increase.

Figures released by Public Health Scotland have revealed a total of 1484 new cases last week – up by 105 per cent on the previous week.

That equates to 4.63 cases for every 1000 residents, which is among the highest in the country and higher than the national average (3.65).

The largest number of the new cases last week were in East Kilbride and Avondale where 471 were recorded – up by 170 per cent on the previous week.

That equates to 4.92 cases per 1000 residents.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang saw the second highest rate of new cases.

Last week saw 299 cases in Rutherglen and Cambuslang – up 131 per cent on the previous week – which equates to 4.91 cases per 1000 residents.

The Hamilton area saw the third highest number of new Covid-19 cases in the region last week after 466 were recorded – up 62 per cent.

That equates to 4.52 cases per 1000 residents.

Clydesdale recorded 248 Covid-19 cases last week – up by 85 per cent.

The rate of new cases last week was lowest in Clydesdale at 4.08 per 1000 residents.

Nerston and EK Landward area recorded the highest number of new cases last week at 46, while Blantyre South and Wheatlands (33), Halfway, Hallside and Drumsagard (44), Lanark South (30), Little Earnock (33), St Leonards South (31), Shawfield and Clincarthi­ll (34), Stonehouse (40), Strathaven South (36) and Uddingston and Gardenside (43) all recorded at least 30 cases last week.

The highest rate of new cases was in Shawfield and Clincarthi­ll where 9.71 cases per 1000 residents was last week.

Blantyre South and Wheatlands (7.69), Calderwood West and Nerston (7.07), Lanark South (7.75), St Leonards South (7.01), Strathaven North (8.33) and Strathaven South (7.84) also saw more than seven cases for every 1,000 residents.

Only 13 of the 82 neighbourh­oods in South Lanarkshir­e recorded less than 10 cases, while 68 recorded at least three cases for every 1000 residents.

The data provided by Public Health Scotland covers the most recent available seven day period from Saturday, August 14 to Friday, August 20.
