Brutal street attack with a mallet
An animal lover brutally attacked a man on the head with a mallet.
Sean Lamont, 21, pounced on a 44-year-old male, in Castlemilk on June 13, 2019.
The pair had earlier argued in an Iceland supermarket before Lamont chased the male with the weapon.
Lamont struck his victim on the head leaving four wounds which required staples and stitches.
Lamont pled guilty this week at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault to his victim’s severe injury.
The court heard the pair were separately shopping at the supermarket in the area’s Braes shopping centre.
Prosecutor John Bedford said the pair had a“slight disagreement”before leaving.
He added:“Lamont started to run and chase after the 44-year-old male for a short distance.
“He caught up with him while Lamont was in possession of a mallet.
“Lamont struck the man
several times on the head and the strikes made a connection.
“The man fell to the ground before staff from Iceland made their way out to see a pool of blood lying in the area the assault took place.”
Both men had fled the scene but the male was later treated at hospital.
Mr Bedford said:“The victim received four wounds, two were on the scalp area which were closed with eight stitches.
“There was a further two wounds on his forehead which required four stitches each.
“There was also a hematoma and swelling.”
Lamont meantime handed himself into police.
Ashley Pollock, defending, told the court:“He is a working man in a tropic fish warehouse.
“This is his passion, which is for animals.
“He has two young daughters and he provides support for his family. He is under no illusions of the serious matter before the court.”
It was also revealed Lamont has a previous conviction for a similar offence. Sentence was deferred until next month pending background reports by Sheriff Sean Murphy QC.
He said:“In your case, given your previous record, custody remains a distinct possibility so keep this in mind before coming back to court.”
