Gym-goers in a sweat over noise level row
Gym-goers in Cambuslang were left dumbfounded after South Lanarkshire Council weighed in on complaints over noise levels at the venue.
Members at Energie Fitness on Main Street now feel the club is being made a punching bag by the council, and warned a change to business hours would be a real hammer blow.
Signs were put up recently warning fitness fans they needed to stay quiet when working out, and to avoid dropping items like weights and dumbbells on the floor.
It is understood there have also been complaints over music being played at the gym, which has flats above it.
SLC confirmed they told Energie Fitness owners they would restrict their business hours to opening during the working day if the problems continued, a move which could see members leave in droves. One gym-goer said:
“It was a bit of a surprise when we saw the signs up telling everybody to be quiet.
“It’s hard not to drop weights on the floor sometimes. Apparently someone had complained to the council and they’d told Energie they would only be allowed to open 9am to 5pm unless it was sorted out. It seemed a harsh thing to leap to so quickly.
“I go to the gym before or after work, and I know loads of others who do the same, so changing the hours would
take a lot of people away from the club, and from Cambuslang.
“I’d have to find another gym if that happened.”
The gym was only able to reopen earlier in the summer after months shut due to Covid restrictions.
A spokesperson for Energie Fitness confirmed they had been the subject of a noise complaint and stated they were working with SLC to find a solution, and that sound insulating measures had been introduced at the gym. The council stated that the threat of restricting the gym’s hours had now been lifted, but they were continuing to investigate the level of noise coming from the building.
The council’s Shirley Clelland said: “Environmental services has served a notice in relation to noise from the gym during night-time hours.
“The gym operator took action to mitigate the sound from weights being dropped which has helped reduce the level of noise experienced by neighbouring properties.
“We’re still receiving complaints concerning noise and further investigation is planned, the outcome of monitoring activity will determine if further action is required.
“Environmental Services had initially indicated the hours of operation would need to be reduced, however, this requirement was removed when the gym operator agreed to introduce sound insulation measures.”
