Special service to be held for Covid victims
A Cambuslang church have announced plans to hold a memorial service for those who lost their lives during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Rev Peter Nimmo has announced that Cambuslang Parish Church will look to hold the service later in the year, as Covid-19 restrictions continue to be rolled back.
Rev Nimmo, who took over at the Arnott Way parish during the pandemic, explained the decision in a recent message to his congregation.
He told them: “Many of us have lost loved ones – to Covid and in other ways – but did not have the chance to mark their passing in the usual way.
“We therefore also plan to hold a memorial service, as soon as it is safe to do so. This will be chance to remember together those in our congregation and community whom we have lost.
“And if your family would like your own memorial service for someone, we can also do that for you– please let me know.”
South Lanarkshire has been one of the worst affected areas in Scotland for the virus, with over 26,000 cases and nearly 700 deaths.
The news came as the church, like many in the area, began to get back to normal.
A summer club was recently held there, while parishioners have been able to resume singing during services, and further announcements on many of the groups that used the church premises are expected soon.
However Rev Nimmo has also warned members of the congregation to remain cautious given the spread of the new Delta variant.
He added: “We all need to continue to be careful, especially as there are still so many people who continue to be vulnerable. Please continue to follow government advice on matters such as masks and social distancing, which is there to protect all of us.
“Remember that Christians are meant to be people who love their neighbours, and care for the vulnerable.”
The church will hold a special service on Sunday, September 12, celebrating being able to return to worship. It will begin at 10.30am.
