Samaritans: We are here to help you day and night
Samaritans is there 24/7
Samaritans are reminding Lanarkshire residents that they are here for people experiencing crisis and distress.
The message comes after new figures revealed 112 people took their own life in the county last year.
Based in Hamilton, the charity provides free anonymous and confidential emotional support for anyone in Lanarkshire.
Willie Kerr, is director of the Hamilton branch and he reaffirmed their commitment to anyone who might need their support, saying: “Behind everyone one of these figures is a life lost, with devastating consequences for families, friends and communities.
“These figures are a reminder of why we continue to make suicide prevention our focus as we emerge from the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
“While it is encouraging to see that, nationally, there has been a slight decrease in suicide in 2020 compared to the previous year, we know there is still a long way to go to ensure fewer lives are lost to suicide and more people receive the right support at the right time.
“At Lanarkshire Samaritans we have been working to support our community throughout the coronavirus pandemic and ensure that people know they don’t have to face difficult times alone.
“As well as helping Samaritans be there to listen whenever and wherever someone needs us, we’ve been running digital talks for community groups to promote the importance of talking openly about mental health and share how we can all be there to listen for family, friends and colleagues.
“As coronavirus restrictions ease we are looking forward to running more in-person community events to raise awareness of the support available locally. We continue to work on suicide prevention alongside our partners in Lanarkshire Suicide Awareness, the Police, Social Services, Education, and Network Rail.
“We have an active Outreach team who support communities and business as well as a team who support schools direct.
“For anyone who is going through a difficult time or who is worried about a loved one, Samaritans is here to listen and support, day or night. You can call Samaritans free, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans. org. Whatever you’re facing, we’re here for you.”
