Cambuslang aim to down Albert after ‘Cairn call-off
Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell saw his side’s game with Gartcairn called off
Cambuslang Rangers know a win against lowly Royal Albert can put them back on top of the West of Scotland League Conference A table, but co-boss Billy Campbell won’t be taking them lightly.
There are 23 points between second-placed Gers – who had their weekend clash with Gartcairn postponed over a Covid outbreak at the Airdrie club – and Albert in 13th going into the clash.
Albert have achieved just a single point this term from 10 games, while Gers are on an eight-game winning streak.
But Campbell says if there are so-called easier games, the top sides still need to make sure they’re on top of their game.
Campbell said:“It’s a chance to go back on top of the league but we’ll just go in and play.
“We’ll get ourselves prepared this week, play our normal game, and hopefully the boys turn up on the day
“We were up against Dalry, which was supposedly an easier game – without being disrespectful to Dalry or anybody in this league – but we went in 0-0 at half-time and to be fair to Dalry, they should probably have been ahead.
“We’re very conscious of that; if there is such a thing as an‘easier game’ in the league, you need to make sure you turn up.
“Against Dalry we had a wee word, went out in the second half and ended up winning relatively comfortably, but that doesn’t make it an overly comfortable day, and you do have that concern about these games.
“We’ve known the boys at Royal Albert for years, so we’ll give them as much respect as we give everyone else, make sure we turn up on the day and play our own game.”
Campbell was disappointed when last Saturday’s clash at Gartcairn was called off.
He says there will be bumps in the road for everybody, and will just have to get on with it as best they can.
He said:“Their guys were struggling – they had a few with Covid and the rest of the team were isolating.
“It’s not away yet, and it’s a shame because we were looking forward to the game, but there’s not much you can do.
“The safety of the players is paramount in this situation and we just need to go with it.
“It will happen to everybody. If anybody thinks it’s away and we’re all back to normal again... that’s not going to happen, there are going to be bumps on the road for everybody.
“We gave the boys Saturday off, last-minute stuff; rather than trying to find somewhere to train, we just thought we’d give them the day off.”
