Cambuslang Rugby Club coach Alex Donaghy says his side were guilty of “stupid errors”but were unlucky to lose against Annan on Saturday.

Donaghy’s side lost the West League 1 clash 26-18 at home, but Donaghy says they’re not far away, having lost by just nine points over two games.

On Saturday’s defeat, he said:“The boys played quite well, but there were some stupid errors, silly mistakes, and we didn’t really get the rub of the referee – some decisions that we should have got, he didn’t give.

“Annan are a good, disciplined team, so we’ll take things away from it and the next time we play them we’ll try to play differently, and see where it goes from there.”

Cambuslang travel to sixth-placed Garnock this weekend, who are currently three points ahead, and expects a tough clash.

He said:“It will be tough, Garnock are a big, powerful team, so we’ll try and just run them off the park, if we can.

“We don’t want to play to their strengths, we want to try and play to ours, and play our own game.

“The boys have played well; in the two games we’ve lost there have been nine points between them both, so there’s very little in it.

“Those two [losing bonus] points could very easily have been 10 points and we would be sitting top of the league with two wins out of two if a couple of wee things went for us, so we’ve been unlucky.

“There are some tough games in the next couple of weeks, but we just need to go for it and try our best.

“We’re not far away – there’s not a lot on our points-difference when you see teams like Allan Glen’s putting 59 points past Kilmarnock, who are one of the strong teams in the league.”

Donaghy has appealed against last week’s slender defeat at Strathendrick after his opponents mistakenly used seven substitutes instead of four, having misread a Scottish Rugby memo that was intended for clubs higher up in the leagues.

Alex said:“We hear this week, so we hope it goes our way, but they might get a slap on the wrist.

“If they just get a slap on the wrist and nothing happens then I can appeal against that, because then why can’t I use seven subs instead of four, say I’m sorry, and it’s okay?

“They can deduct points, give us the win or fine them – they can’t fine amateur teams that much – but it’s just one of those things.

“We don’t know what kind of mood they’re in, but Strathendrick have been in the league for many years and they should know the rules.”
