Book club get to air their literary views on television
Dedicated book lovers from Cambuslang are set to feature on a new BBC Scotland series.
Writer Damian Barr returns with a new series of The Big Scottish Book Club showcasing some of the biggest names and new talent in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry from around the world.
And some bookworms from Cambuslang will feature in the first episode this Sunday, October 31, at 10pm.
The first of eight episodes comes from Motherwell Concert Hall with guests Louise Welsh who discusses The Second Cut, the much anticipated follow up to her bestselling 2002 thriller The Cutting Room; Sarah Perry, who explores what it means to be an Essex girl and James Robertson, who takes us to the rugged landscapes of the Scottish Highlands in News of the Dead.
There’s also a spoken word performance from Mara Menzies.
This week’s theme delves into the importance of location and the Cambuslang-based book group tell the panel what they think of James Robertson’s News of the Dead.
These book reviewers are members of the online Scottish Book Club.
Leader of the club Natalie McMath, who lives in Newton, said: “The Big Scottish Book Club was a brilliant opportunity for our group, especially as it gave us a chance to meet in person and discuss a book for the first time.”
The group was filmed discussing the book in the play area of the Newton Arms in Newton Farm.
They also went to Motherwell and feature in the recording of the interviews for the first episode, posing a question of their own to author James Robertson. Damian Barr said: “Scottish authors and publishers are on top of the world right now and I’m delighted to be celebrating both favourite voices and new names.”
