Memorial service for Covid victims

- J ONATHAN GEDDES

A memorial service for victims of the coronavirus pandemic is set to go ahead this week.

The service on Sunday, October 31, at Cambuslang Parish Church will also mark the lives of others whose funeral took place during the lockdown restrictions.

And the Church of Scotland’s minister of Cambuslang, Rev Peter W Nimmo, said: “Since Covid arrived in Scotland, many people have died or suffered serious illness.

“The lockdown from March last year brought the closure of churches and restrictions on gathering of all kinds, including funerals.

“During that time, many of us lost loved ones, but did not have the opportunity to say goodbye to them in the way we wanted to, and many of those Covid deaths were unexpected and premature.

“We are writing to the families all those for whom Cambuslang Parish Church has conducted funerals since last March, inviting them to join us at this service.

“And we also want to invite the wider community to join us in remembering anyone who died of any cause, whom they have lost during this time.”

The service will include prayers at which the names of people who died will be read out.

Anyone wishing for their friend or relative’s name to be mentioned, should contact the church Office at 0141 642 9271.

The service will also feature a ‘Remembering Banner’ on which people have written the names of loved ones.

The service is open to those of all faiths and none, with refreshments after the service.

Anyone seeking further information on the service should email Rev. Nimmo for more details at PNimmo@ churchofscotland.org.uk
