Queen’s Park head coach Laurie Ellis admits his side are going back to the drawing board after a madcap game against Alloa Athletic ended in a 4-3 home defeat.

The Spiders were undefeated in League One heading into the match but the Wasps inflicted their first defeat upon them with a dramatic finish at Firhill.

Kevin C awley opened the scoring for Alloa just a minute into the match but Bob McHugh’s double either side of half-time had given Queen’s Park the lead.

Craig Howie pulled the Firhill visitors on level terms and Luca Connell’s goal in the 88th minute looked to have snatched a late Queen’s Park victory.

But Euan Henderson scored twice in two stoppage-time minutes to seal Alloa’s victory

Queen’s are still top of League One but face second place Cove Rangers this week, who are level on points.

Ellis said:“The afternoon ended in the worst possible way.

“We could have been sat in a position where we are celebrating a really important victory.

“We should have been in that position when we got in front. It would have been a hard-fought three points but the way we end the game is a really sore one.

“We have a dressing room that have told me that we didn’t hit the levels we usually set, especially coming off last week at Dumbarton where we controlled the game and we were comfortable throughout.

“To come into this game where we didn’t hit those levels, to not have the same urgency as a team, that’s obviously something we are not happy about.”

A win for rivals Airdrieonians has Queen’s Park, Cove and the Diamonds all level on 20 points at the summit of League One and Ellis wants to see a response form his side this week.

He added:“What we do have is be a team capable of dealing with a setback like this.

“We have to correct this. It’s tough being a professional football player and it’s a tough league we play in.

“It’s no surprise that we come up against good teams every week and that we face tough challenges. So that’s a given.

“As a staff and as a playing group, we need to get ourselves going again.

“We will go in and have a good week of training to correct this with a result up at Cove Rangers.”
