On track for greener station
Primary school pupils in Cambuslang have been showing off their new growing space at a local train station.
The youngsters were out engaging with their community at Newton Station in Cambuslang.
Here, they have adopted an area for a project to make the station more attractive for passengers.
The initiative launched on Community Rail Week ahead of COP26 in a bid to promote train transport as a greener means of travel.
Primary 6 pupils at neighbouring school St Charles were out planting bulbs in the first of many visits to the area where they will look after the garden and learn about rail safety.
Leading up to the launch, generous support was given by local firms who donated free material such as bark for the growing space. Meanwhile a group of volunteers got involved in clearing the area, ready for the kids to plant bulbs as well as grow food.
Teacher Rose Hewitt is leading the project on behalf of Rail74CRP said: “It’s been great preparing the area and gathering the planning ideas and letting the kids put their own stamp on it.
“We were at the station meeting and greeting the customers where we had prepared gifts as a random act of kindness to give everyone a smile. For us it’s about engaging with the community and making the station more attractive can encourage more passengers onto trains as a more ecofriendly way of travel.”
The project is also supported by mental health charity Samaritans who provided the P6 pupils with leaflets to give out to passengers.
The children will continue to visit Newton Station at least once a month to nurture their new garden and continue to spread their positive message.
