Youngsters rally to help out food bank

- JONATHAN GEDDES

Kind pupils at a Cambuslang school provided support to those in need recently.

Youngsters at West Coats Primary wanted to try and help other people, which led to them appealing for food donations to provide to the area’s food bank.

A whopping 250 bags of goods were brought in, and the hard working kids then sorted the food before delivering it to volunteers at the Rutherglen and Cambuslang foodbank, who were grateful at the amount provided.

Class teacher Lynne Hamilton told the Reformer: “We recently made links with the foodbank and our pupils brought in donations as part of our Harvest celebrations.

“Our children outdid themselves and we overwhelmed the foodbank with over 250 shopping bags of food that they are in desperate need of.

“It took three full car loads to take it all in the end.

“Our primary six children spent three afternoons sorting the food in to groups and bagged them accordingly so it was easier for the volunteers to unpack and stack the shelves at the depot.

“Going forward, when restrictions are lifted, we are hoping to take small groups on to help stack shelves and make up bags for families at their newly acquired premises.

“We look forward to working with them again in the future.”

Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank currently operates three distribution centres in the area to help try and combat food poverty.

They rely entirely on the generosity of the public for items such as biscuits, tins of fruit or fish, jam, sugar, coffee, washing up liquid, toilet rolls and toiletries.
