Appeal urges shoppers to ‘Give a Gift of Joy’

- MATT BRYAN

A charitable Christmas gift appeal launched this week to help out those less fortunate in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.

Local organisation Healthy ‘n’ Happy has teamed up with the Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre for the gift drive as residents are asked to kindly donate items this festive season.

The ‘Give a Gift of Joy’ campaign aims to help people already struggling in the community, with the winter months proving to be a tougher time for those in need.

As of this week, locals are urged to help out in any way they can to help spread the festive cheer this Christmas period.

The appeal is looking for your gift donations – asking shoppers to pick up an extra gift when they are out and about.

Or if anyone is clearing out last year’s unused gifts, you can keep them aside and send them in to the campaign’s collection point in the shopping centre.

Only new or nearly-new quality gift items to the value of £5-£10 will be accepted and will be given to young people and older residents.

Gifts for youngsters will be for those aged: 0-2, 2-5, 5-8, 8-12, 12+ (boys, girls or unisex) and could include toys, books, headphones etc.

For older residents, gift ideas could be hats, scarves, gloves, socks, books or bath/shower gifts.

Gifts can be dropped off at Unit 7, Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre, 212-219 Main Street, Rutherglen G73 2LS until Tuesday, November 30.

The collection point will be available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 10am to 1pm.

Jane Cowan, Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre manager, told the Reformer: “We’re delighted to be involved and to help facilitate this wonderful gift campaign. Our retailers have a fabulous range of gifts to suit all ages which may provide some inspiration when choosing gifts to donate”.

Brendan Rooney, executive director from the trust, added: “We’re delighted to partner with Rutherglen Exchange Shopping

Centre for this year’s Give a Gift of Joy campaign and thank them sincerely for all their support.

“This Christmas will be a difficult time of year for lots of residents in CamGlen, so we would ask people to support this gift drive if they can and help make someone’s

Christmas a bit more special”.

“We’d also like to thank Cambuslang BankHUB, 158 Main Street, Cambuslang, G72 7EL, for being another gift drop off point from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm”.
