Trolley good show!

Paula’s grand effort for foodbank in supermarket sweep

- SHIRLEY BARTYNEK

The winner of Aldi’s Supermarket Sweep in Rutherglen raised almost £1000 for her local foodbank.

Savvy shopper Paula Robertson raced round the store during a five-minute trolley dash.

And as well as raising an amazing £931 for Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank, she picked up over £465 in Aldi favourites for herself.

A delighted Paula said: “I had such a great time and I am really pleased to have been given the opportunity to help my local foodbank.”

The supermarket sweep returned after a year’s hiatus and lucky Paula was chosen as the winner of an in-store competition.

As well as taking home a trolley full of goodies, she successfully found three special Scottish products on her shopping list, so Aldi doubled the total value of her haul and donated the lump sum to her nominated charity, Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank.

Kathleen Duncan, secretary of the foodbank, said the funds from the supermarket sweep will be put to good use.

She told us: “The event was so well organised and all the Aldi staff were really engaged and helpful. “Paula did a marvellous job.

“We are so grateful to be chosen as the recipient of the generation donation. This money will help our dedicated volunteers continue to supply food in the Rutherglen and Cambuslang area to those who need it most.

“The money will also go towards purchasing duvets, blankets and fleeces which will help keep people warm in the coming cold months.

“Without the generous support and help from Aldi, we couldn’t do this valuable and necessary work so effectively.

“I’d like to thank Aldi and offer our warmest wishes for its continued success in our area.”

Richard Holloway, Aldi’s regional managing director for Scotland, said: “The Aldi Supermarket Sweep is a firm favourite across the country, and we are so pleased to be able to bring it back after a year’s hiatus.

“Congratulations to Paula who managed to raise an incredible £931.32 for Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank and take home a trolley full of Aldi goodies for herself.”

The supermarket sweep was run in line with current Covid-19 guidelines and all safety precautions, including social distancing, were adhered to.
