Santa blazes a trail to make youngsters smile

- EMMA LAWSON

Santa is coming to Rutherglen – and he’s bringing with him a spectacular lighting display and toys for all the children.

The Burnhill Elf Trail is returning this Saturday (December 18) and it is expected to be even bigger than last year.

This free event allows families to walk from the play gym next to Glencairn Football grounds and around to see the Christmas light display. Lizzy McDonald, one of the volunteers behind the trail, told the Reformer: “We are looking forward to it. The community is excited about it.

“It’s important that we support smaller local businesses, which is why we’ve got small local stalls set up this year.”

Families can also step inside a large snow globe for photographs and a tombola will also be on the route. At the end of the magical trail, children will have the opportunity to meet Santa and receive a special Christmas gift from him.

The trail started last year, thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers from Burnhill Action Group.

Lizzy said:“A lot of kids didn’t get to do much last year because of the lockdown and that was one of the reasons we started it.

“The trail was a bit longer last year, due to having to social distance. It was an amazing response last year.”

The group is expecting an even bigger turnout than last year, when around 250 people attended.

Volunteers are asking people who are planning to come along to RSVP via the Facebook page so that they have enough gifts for all the children.
