New chapter for school libraries
Youngsters at a Cambuslang school were able to read all about it recently – when they relaunched their library.
Staff at Cairns Primary had decided it was time to freshen up their offerings, with teachers choosing new books that they hoped would capture the youngsters’ imaginations.
The aim was to encourage the children to want to read as much as possible, with new titles, while there were various activities held too.
Michelle McMenemy, acting principal teacher at the school, said: “Our new libraries are packed full of new titles and interesting reads to get the children excited about reading.
“Each class developed their own class library, making them cosy and inviting spaces to curl up with a book.
“Some classes explored poetry and created tongue twisters, others went on top secret missions sent to them from their books and the nursery children went on a bear hunt in Cambuslang Park with their parents.
“There were news broadcasts sharing important information gained from texts, quizzes linked to their class novels and bids to become Prime Minister.
“The staff got involved and became ‘Masked Readers,’ where the children then had to guess the reader and the book they were reading. The children also were part of a big book giveaway, and they were able to choose a book to keep and take home.”
Miss McMenemy added that the pupils are not the only ones to benefit from the revamp.
She said: “We are developing our reading culture from staff to children with the relaunch of not only our school and class libraries, but we are also developing our staff knowledge and skill set by introducing a staff library.
“Developing our reading culture across the school is important and most of all we want the children to enjoy reading.
“We want reading to be an escape and a gateway to learning new things, develop knowledge on area of interest and allow us to share with others.”
