Kids’ book is recipe for success

A Glasgow school has cooked up success – thanks to getting celebrities to send in their favourite recipes.

Pupils and staff at Toryglen Primary have created their own cookbook as part of an enterprise project, with all the profits raised going towards the school and local foodbanks.

The idea came from class teacher Laura Murney a couple of years ago, but was temporarily put on hold during the lockdown last year.

They asked as many celebs as possible to help out, with the likes of Judy Murray, actor and comedian Chris O’Dowd, comedian Aisling Bea and Strictly Come Dancing favourite Gino D’Acampo all getting involved.

Laura said: “It really started as a project about two years ago, so we’ve picked it back up with the P6s and P7s once classes resumed in person properly.

“The kids are wanting to raise money for a residential trip for the school, and to help out local foodbanks as well.

“They’re a kind group and they’re quite set on helping the less fortunate, so selling something to raise money to help out seemed a good idea.

“The pupils all came together and wrote a list of celebrities to approach, and we got to work messaging them, Tweeting them and things like that. We got a really good response from a lot of them, who came back with recipes that we could use in the book.”

As well as the famous faces who’ve helped, the children themselves were quick to put forward their own culinary choices.

Laura added: “They’ve worked really hard and picked their own favourite recipes, things like their gran’s traditional macaroni and cheese, and we included all of them in there too.

“We’ve made it both as an e-book and as a printed version, and been selling it through the school. It’s a good way to teach the kids about enterprise, but also have fun and capture their imagination by getting the celebrities involved.”
