Matt:Glens mustkeep winscoming

- BEN BANKS

Rutherglen Glencairn goalkeeper Matt McGinley says it’s not ideal that so many teams will exit the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division next month – and Glens would be safe in a normal season.

At least six teams will be relegated ahead of a restructuring process this summer and Willie Harvey’s side are in the fight to survive in the top flight over the coming weeks.

They are making a good fist of it and have won three of their last four games, including an important 3-1 victory over Kilbirnie Ladeside most recently.

While a 6-0 defeat to promotionchasing Auchinleck Talbot was sore, the Kilbirnie win coupled with 2-0 successes over Glenafton Athletic and Benburb have them 12th and above relegation danger.

Boss Harvey believes 52 points would be enough and 55 points may all but definitely secure survival.

They currently sit on 49 ahead of two defining matches with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy and Pollok, and McGinley says wins have to keep coming.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper said: “We said that before the Auchinleck Talbot game that anything from that was a bonus.

“But the games around that have been massive. All the teams around us are fighting and scrapping.

“It’s just unfortunate that so many teams are going down. That’s why it’s so important to take maximum points in the league when we can.

“We knew this season was going to be challenging. In any other season, we would be more than safe a long time ago.

“But because so many teams are going down, we need to be on it until the last game of the season.

“All these games against teams around us have been and are massive. The same goal for us all along has been to stay up with the amount of teams going down.

“We haven’t achieved our goal yet. We still have some huge games to go this season.”
