Nursery fund-raisers on their bikes to bring in over £2500

- JONATHAN GEDDES

Staff at a Rutherglen nursery showed pedal power with a sponsored cycle last weekend.

Parents of youngsters at Glenburgh Nursery also joined in with the 24-mile cycle, which started in Balloch before finishing up back at the nursery.

The purpose of the trip was to raise funds for the nursery, and was the latest idea staff have conjured up to create some cash, which will go towards the resources for kids who attend there.

Staff member Nicola Valente told the Reformer it had all gone well – although there were a few hurdles to overcome on the day.

She said:“It went pretty well, although one of my brakes wasn’t working properly. I had to video call my friend to get her advice on how to fix it, and we had some problems with one of the other bikes that held us up a little.

“We did it in about three hours, starting from the train station there, and we were lucky as the weather was really nice.

“It’s all about raising money for the nursery. It’ll go right into resources for the children and providing extra help for kids with additional support needs.

“We’ve tried to do a few different things, like a sponsored rave for National Dance Week. We did a wee dance, had the lights set up and the kids got dressed up, then they danced their wee socks off.”

Nicola was joined on the bike ride by colleagues Sara Connolly and Rebecca Kennedy, as well as Graeme Baxter, who’s daughter Billie attends Glenburgh.

Graeme added:“I’d been talking about doing a sponsored cycle when the war in Ukraine started, to raise funds for over there, but we couldn’t get the timing right with my pal for that.

“So I thought it’d be good to do this for the nursery, and it went from there. I started cycling a lot during the lockdown, as it’s really good for your mental health and it was a reason to get out.

“The nursery do a good job, and the money will benefit all the kids there. I also got a donation from the Three Scottish Soldiers charity, who generously gave us £150.”

So far the nursery fundraising has landed over £2500, and staff are planning other events as the year goes on.
