Famous faces help pupils dish up top cook book

- JONATHAN GEDDES

A Glasgow school is taking a bite out of food poverty thanks to its charity cookbook.

Last year we told how pupils at Toryglen Primary had written their own cookbook, asking a number of celebrities to provide their favourite recipes.

Famous faces such as Paolo Nutini, Judy Murray, Gino D’Acampo and Still Game star Gavin Mitchell all contributed to the project, developed by P6 and P7 kids.

Now the book, titled The Famous Cookbook, is being sold both at the school and also as a new digital version, with proceeds going to the school and local foodbanks.

They have already raised £200 for the good cause.

Class teacher Laura Murney explained: “It’s been a really positive experience. They’ve gained a lot of life skills, not just through the enterprise aspect of the project, but other things as well. We’ve tried some of the recipes in class so they have learned to cook. They’ve improved their literacy skills through the amount of writing and reading in putting the book together.

“They have been doing all the cash handling too, so they’ve had to work out how to spend their funds, and what to use it all on.

“They enjoyed hearing back from the celebrities too!”

Other celebs who happily got involved include Irish comedian Aisling Bea, TV presenter Iain Stirling and Scots funnywoman, Janey Godley.

Laura added: “We’ve had a few retweets and likes from the people involved.

“Nick Nairn liked the post and Gavin Mitchell asked if he could come round for his tea sometime.

“Susie McCabe’s soup , our head teacher’s snowballs and Janey Godley’s mince and

tatties have been really popular when we’ve tried them in class.

“We’ve raised £200 in around a week of online sales and we’ll be using some of that to go to Asda and get donations for the foodbanks.

“We just want to say thanks to everyone who got involved and gave their time to help us.”
