Cambuslang ready for Darvel rematch

- BEN BANKS

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell says his side have learned from their 5-1 loss at Darvel ahead of their rematch this weekend.

The Ayrshire side have stormed to West of Scotland Football League Premier Division title glory and host a Camby team who’ve been promoted to that league after winning Conference B.

It’ll be a big test for the Somervell Park team after their South Challenge Cup lesson but they’ve upped their game ahead of this WOSFL Kilmarnock Pie Cup quarter-final.

Campbell’s side are all but done for the campaign and can extend their term with a victory over Darvel, who’s main focus will be getting promoted to the Lowland League via the play-offs.

The Wee Gers co-gaffer last put his team out on in the last round against Craigmark Burntonians on April 30, and he hopes a period without games doesn’t have an adverse impact.

He said: “We are completely done now and we have all been waiting for this game. They have so much quality at their level, with the way they are performing every week.

“It will be a really tough game against them but we will go out and set up to play. We will give it our best shot.

“That’s a tough gig for us but when you get to the latter rounds of the cup, you are going to be meeting teams who are here for a reason.

“Darvel is a massive club now so we will just need to prepare well for it, as we were hoping it wouldn’t be two or three weeks away.

“It makes it a bit tougher for us.” What can’t happen in the game is mistakes according to Campbell - as Cambuslang were punished for that the last time they met.

He explained: “We have come on since we last played them. It was 5-1 on the day but they were clinical. We probably made two mistakes and got punished. Then we made two halfmistakes and got punished for them as well.

“Every other game you probably get away with those sort of things. But you can’t get away with things like that against a team like Darvel.

“We did that on the day but we didn’t think it was a 5-1 game. But the bottom line was that was the score. They have had a good season and so have we.

“We want to go and offer a bit more with regards to winning the game.

“They are an excellent team, they look like going up to the Lowland League, so it is a massive task for us.”
