Fraser Malcolm scored the goal that gives Rutherglen Glencairn hope of beating the drop from the West of Scotland Premier League and says it’s crazy they could go down on 50 points.
Glencairn trailed Pollok 1-0 at Newlandsfield Park, courtesy of Dylan Dykes’14th-minute penalty, but Malcolm netted his second in as many games to level in 39 minutes.
Neither side could find a winner in the second half, and Glencairn ended their season on 50 points, four clear of Glenafton Athletic at the time, but who had three games in hand.
Glenafton beat Irvine Meadow 2-1 on Monday, to move within a point of Glencairn, and they host Blantyre Victoria tonight ( Wednesday), with their final clash at Cumbernauld United on May 28.
Before that is the Lowland League play-off, with Darvel hoping to overcome St Cuthbert’s Wanderers on May 25, to gain entry, which would leave whichever side is in 14th place safe from the drop.
Should Darvel lose, it’s likely that Glencairn and Glenafton will both drop down to next season’s First Division.
Malcolm said:“It’s a waiting game for us now. I think Largs Thistle won today [3-0 against Clydebank] so we can’t catch them, but I’m hoping that a few teams do us a favour in games against Glenafton Athletic and keep us up.
“We’re on 50 points. It’s crazy if we are to go down with 50 points, because we’ve had a really good season, with a lot of good wins.
“It’s crazy, if we go down.
“But if we do go down I’m confident that we can come straight back up.
“With the players that we’ve got, and the players the manager will bring in, we should come straight back up.”
From a personal point of view, Malcolm was pleased to get on the score-sheet, clinically finishing a difficult chance to earn Glens a point.
He added:“I’m excited and it felt good in the moment to get the goal. Hopefully it is enough to keep us up. “I think we could have done more. “We had a lot more chances - both teams had good chances - and I think 1-1 is probably a fair result for the game, but unfortunately we didn’t get the win.
“That’s two goals in two games, and I’m just happy to get minutes.
“I’ve been on the bench for most of the season and when I come on I just want to help the team, of course.
“The main way I can do that is by scoring goals, being a striker, so I’m happy with two in two.”
