Children at a Cambuslang primary school showed off their design skills recently when they took part in a Taylor Wimpey competition.

St Charles Primary at Newton Farm, have been designing bird boxes as part of a sustainability challenge set by the local housing development to encourage more wildlife into private gardens.

The children were invited to paint their own bird box and Taylor Wimpey’s local sustainability champion, Maya Calvert, chose her favourite three designs before the youngsters took their bird boxes home to their gardens.

Taylor Wimpey supplied pupils with all the materials needed and more than 20 children took part.

Three winners were awarded National Book Tokens and every child also received a copy of Taylor Wimpey’s

Ecotastic Activity book which is designed to help children find out fun facts about the environment.

Maya said:“We were delighted when St Charles Primary agreed to take part in our bird box design competition.

“Not only are we providing brand new and stylish homes for Taylor Wimpey’s customers at Newton Farm in Cambuslang, there are now some very stylish bird boxes for the local birds to call home too.

“We hope the children enjoy trying some of the eco-challenges in our Ecotastic Activity book.”

Stephen Garvey, teacher and head of the eco group, added:“The children had great fun coming up with the designs for and painting their bird boxes.

“Millie, Eva and Aiden were delighted to have their designs chosen as Maya’s favourite and all of the children were thrilled to take their bird boxes home.”
