Scootering

Violator

A show-winning custom Lambretta 90s original.

Way back in 1990 Peter swapped his Lambretta, which was in a sorry state, for a Vespa P200 with his club mate Oliver. What he didn’t know at the time was that 25 years later both the Lambretta and Peter would be as one again.

The Vespa didn’t stay long in his possession, and he was already thinking the swap was a big mistake. Oliver and Peter sprayed the Lambretta together in Volkswagen Ocean Metallic, then it was entrusted to trophy winning artist Ullrich Lau to do the artwork on the panels and legshields. Peter’s clubmate tried his hand at engraving and some detailing can still be seen on the scooter today. Oliver soon lost interest with scootering and just left the scooter lying outside his house. Violator had only been seen on one or two scooter rallies back then when it completely disappeared from the scene, its whereabouts becoming quite a mystery. With encouragement from mates and so that the scooter did not just rot away outside, Oliver pushed it into his barn and Violator quickly faded out of sight and out of mind.

Sadly all the club members of the Rollerpack Neuwied grew apart and only Peter carried on with the soul and scooter scene. Peter missed his mate Oliver, and his old Lambretta, and so started regularly sending emails to Oliver with a hope of buying the Lambretta back. All attempts to contact Oliver went unanswered until spring 2016, then after 25 years and one more email Oliver was ready to sell the Lambretta back to Peter.

The 25 years of standing still obviously leaves its mark, and really everything should have been renewed, however after hard work the paintwork came up to scratch and was saved, The hydraulic brake could also be retained with a little help from eBay. On the technical side of things the Lambretta was entrusted to Worb5 who brought things bang up to date.

The engine was completely rebuilt using a BGM Race-Tour cylinder, Tameni longstroke crankshaft which took the capacity to 231cc giving the engine plenty of torque. A 30mm Dellorto takes care of the breathing and a TSR stainless system takes care of the gases. The timing is an old school AF system from 1990 and still working tops. The suspension has also been updated using BGM shocks front and rear. Everything was set up on the dyno and finally and probably the hardest of all, the Lambretta went through the strict TUV (MOT) system and all modified components were entered into the scooter’s paperwork, making it street legal.

With regards to the look of the Lambretta DL 200 especially in the chrome and engraving department this was carried out with the highly regarded and outstanding workmanship of both Adi Clark and Carl Russel. The rear light was done to pay homage to his old scooter club. Since Violator’s reappearance it has won a couple of trophies so far, best chrome and plating at the Euro Lambretta rally in 2016, and Best Custom at the resent Cologne Scooter custom show. A great start to a new chapter, for an old scooter. Words: Steve Evans, Kulturbanausen SC Photographs: Stefan Kühnel
