Scootering

Man of Mystery

-

A Spider-Man-themed Lambretta was bound to attract promenading families and just like its inspiration, almost nothing is known of its background.

I’ll admit to being in two minds about awarding this month’s Car Park Custom to Gary Mcloughlin’s Spider-Man. With its lustrous paintwork, well executed murals and hand tooled leather seat it has all the hallmarks of a show winner that’s now well-loved and ridden. However almost nothing is known of its history. “It’s been a rough time for me health wise,” explained Gary. “My wife Sara bought this for me earlier in the year as a ‘good news’ gift. It was up in Newcastle and has passed through a couple of owners since being sprayed. We believe it was finished about seven years ago but have no idea who the artist was.” Passers-by suggested it was the work of Whitby based Lee Hopkinson, but he has no knowledge of it. Another contender is Gatch, but again he’s not responsible, nor is there any record of it in Scootering’s electronic archive.

One thing’s for certain, somebody out there must know it. It’s too good to have passed under the radar. We at Scootering, together with Gary and Sarah would love to unmask the man, or woman, behind this particular Spider-Man. Please, let it be someone called Peter Parker!

As The Spa became packed to capacity many took advantage of the sunshine and explored the coast. VCB members in particular could be seen ticking off landmarks as part of the Regional Riders Competition, a fantastic innovation for those who enjoy ride outs with a purpose.

With judging complete, I returned to the main hall. Although I knew my scooter had no chance of winning I was still a little disappointed when it wasn’t placed and can see how showing becomes addictive. Trophies awarded, it was time to clear the floor, return my scooter to the caravan site and prepare for the evening.

Night owls.

For no other reason than the park and ride bus dropped us there, we began our night at the far side of the harbour. After catching the opening of The Strikes we made our way back to The Spa, slaking our thirst at pubs en route, bumping into old friends, and saying goodbyes before the winter garage season descends. Although we missed The Racketeers set we arrived in time to see The Scandals. Technically and musically perfect they filled the dance floor and those who know The Spa will realise what a feat that is.

Having drunk too much and eaten too little we called it a day in the early hours. Wobbling back to the site Dan and I reflected on Brid-17. Filed among my Bridlington memories is that of a scooterist who showed me a photo of himself back in the 70s on a GP identical to my own. Seeing it at the show had made his weekend, the look on his face made mine. Would I recommend entering a custom show? Absolutely. The Nationals are what we make them and there’s always fresh memories to be created.
