Name: Kev ‘Turvey’ Hawkes Job: Quarry foreman. Scooter club: Wicked Willy’s SC. How did you first become interested in scooters: When I was about 14 through my brother, Keith. First scooter: Vespa 50 Special. Favourite scooter model: Lambretta LiSpecial, TV and SX. Favourite style of custom scooter: Chopper. First rally or event: Weston-super-Mare 1983/84 (I think). Favourite and worst rally: Worst – This is England (Peterborough 2015). Boring! Best – IOW 2006 on my first scooter after I’d just got back into the scooter scene. What do you like about rallies: Meeting different people and people from different countries. What do you dislike about rallies: All the whinging about ‘people shouldn’t be going to rallies on autos’ and the arguments around autos in general. What’s your favourite Scootering magazine feature: Dave’s Nostalgic Custom Corner and the fact there’s a broad range of scooters in the magazine in general. Your favourite custom/featured scooter of all time: ‘Future Shock’.

Name of scooter: ‘Butcher Bird’ – it’s controversial. Scooter model: PX125 Vespa. Inspiration for theme: The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 German fighter aircraft and controversy (I’ve seen plenty of Spitfire themed scooters and this is different). Time to build & by who: Approximately 15 months. Kris Green – build, Harry Barlow – engine, Phil Appleyard – artwork. Any specialised mods: Modified Lambretta forks, FS1E shock absorbers, cut-down frame, reproduction dress dagger, ammunition box, iron crosses on the legshields, cockpit dimmer switch from a Fw 190, data plaques from a Fw 190. Describe engine performance, power delivery and scooter handling: Handles like a bag of shit and the power is what you’d expect from a P200E! Is the scooter reliable: Fairly. Do you have any advice or tech tips for anyone starting a project: Build your scooter how you want it to please you, don’t build it to please others. In hindsight, is there anything you would have done differently: No. It’s turned out exactly how I wanted it. Thanks to: Kris Green, Harry Barlow, Phil Appleyard, and Claire for her patience, and understanding on costs!
